My Loss...His Gain!

Philippians 3:7–9
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith
.

Today is Infant & pregnancy loss awareness day, but the reality of losing a child is that every day is a day you remember. Every morning you wake up and every breath you take is a moment they are not here with you; forgetting is not an option.

Often times the pain comes flooding back as if the nightmare has never ended.
You vividly remember the moment your world came crashing down in a matter of seconds. The pain hits so hard you can hardly breathe.  The puzzle that had become too scrambled to fix was the nightmare you so desperately want to escape.

Was it real?

Did these things, this crippling pain really happen?

Your body often stood paralyzed from the inside out.  Standing, siting, and walking were chores that once never took a second thought. You went through the motions and would often pretend to be strong and yet your entire being was screaming to be set free and break the bondage that held you a prisoner.

I was so often broken and beaten; lost and alone. The suffering was suffocating me from within and I had no escape. I was a prisoner to my own pain and crying out with words of helplessness. I found myself on my knees to many times too count and found myself searching and pleading. I wondered if it would ever end. I wondered if I was strong enough. I wondered what God’s plan must be.

I was recently challenged to look at the life of Paul. Paul was a great leader and yet every earthly gain he had ever achieved was of absolutely no value do to the fact that he realized his worth and value were completely found in Jesus Christ. Wow! This has really hit me lately. My children, my family, my life; they are His.

All HIS!

My reward and worth are nothing if I don’t have Jesus Christ.  I began to ask myself if I cherish Christ more than anything else in my life, even more than my children; His children? What if that meant He could take my child at any time, my spouse? Oh…. He has numbered our days. I can find joy in her life in the days He allowed her to have or….ask myself again.

Do I REALLY cherish Christ and TRUST Him more than ANYTHING else in my life?

The answer is yes, oh; but that yes does not role easy off of my tongue. I WANT my children. I WANT to protect them at all cost….

I can’t; He can!

YES He can! I have suffered SUCH loss, but have GAINED so much more in HIM. I know because of Him and His greatness that I will see my little girl again. I know that because of His goodness and His love He has brought me through trail after trail. I have overcome.

Bethany Hope is a gift. A gift of hope and treasures in Christ. I can share her story of hope, grace and love. Her story of triumph through grief. His story of overcoming.
Our battlefield is here every day right in front of us.  I often forget that the ones I treasure the most, the ones that need to see me lose everything to see His riches as gain, are the ones I love the most.

Lord, I pray I can wipe away the tears of pride and hurt and turn my eyes to you. Father remind me to fall at your knees and loss my worldly ways and Gain my ALL in you!

Waiting Room

Waiting Room

My body was trembling and my heart was numb. My hands were wrapped tightly around the steering wheel as I somehow weaved in and out of traffic. My heart knew what my mind was so desperately trying to fight…I wanted hope, I wanted a miracle!

I will never forget that long drive to the hospital. I’m still not sure how I even drove my car because I remember my hands on my stomach the whole way there. I was praying, pleading and begging for my little girl to start moving.

I knew in my heart something was very bad, I knew God was trying to prepare me, but I just couldn’t listen; I couldn’t let go. I had plans and a life prepared for the precious life that had been growing so perfectly inside my womb, how could something be wrong?

Her lifeless little body curled up on that ultrasound machine, with no flickering heartbeat, is a vision I have often had nightmares about. It is a moment where I remember my world crashing faster than I could breathe, and yet it is a memory of my daughter I will never forget. I will never forget how perfect her little spine looked or how tiny her 10 little toes were.  Her arms were curled up to her chest as if she were sleeping ever so sweetly.

They placed me in a room where I would deliver my sweet baby. I remember the waiting…what was I waiting for?  Labor brings joy and yet what was I getting. In some ways, I just wanted her to stay inside me. I wanted to hold her close to my heart and never let go. My labor brought pain and yet joy I never imagined. I feel in love the moment they placed her in my arms. I wanted the moment to last forever.

I held her close to my heart and kissed her ever so gently. Tears rolled from my eyes as my heart tried to understand God’s plan, His purpose.

Why? Why does He need her? I know that His plans are greater than any I could ever imagine, but why did He let her go.

I waited so long for her, I longed for her, I prayed for her.

I was given her and I loved her and then I had to let go and understand that God had bigger plans for her life.

We all fall down, and often it feels like the storm we are facing has no end, and yet God does have a plan. We search, pray and beg God for answers and then we can’t seem to understand when His answer is no because it does not align with the plans we had for ourselves.

God knows best, sees all and has a purpose for your life, my life. So often I have felt like I am stuck in that waiting room of life and I am never going to get an answer or maybe the answer I want, but God is still there. He is waiting with you and guiding you to His perfect plan, which sometimes includes saying no.

Death, divorce, finance, family, children and jobs are only a handful of situations which leave you waiting and pleading with God for help. God may so no, He may say yes, and He may say wait, but no matter what He says you will only see and understand His answer when you have a constant relationship with Him.

Give your life to Him and let Him lead you through the waiting room and into the life He has in store.

Surprisingly Hard Day!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3: 5-6
I finally began unpacking and putting away all of the Christmas goodies that had seemed to make their way onto my bedroom floor. For some reason our bedroom had become the drop spot for everything we didn’t know what to do with when we unpacked the car after our Christmas vacation. This room needed some serious TLC! As I came to the hope chest my mother had given me for Bethany, I decided it was time to gather her things and transfer them into the chest. I got the box down from my closet where her things were and began to go through them. I had not realized how long it had been since I had looked at her stuff. My eyes began to fill with tears as I pulled her hospital blanket close to my face. My heart broke as I smelled the blanket. For weeks after she died I would sleep with her blanket because it still smelled like her, a sweet newborn baby; that smell was gone. I pulled her socks and outfit from the box. They still have stains of her blood on them. There was a small envelope with clips of her dark hair. Then I came across a round clay plate with her footprints and handprint engraved in it. I could not believe how tiny and perfect they were. I began to miss her so much and felt so helpless and inadequate in this moment. I wanted her back.  The verse above came to my mind and I began to say, “Trust in the Lord”. As hard as it was to hold her stuff and miss her so deeply, I also knew she was in the arms of my Savior and I had to trust that he was right there taking care of me and ready to get me through this difficult moment. I gently put her stuff away as I could feel Christ reminding me that I was here to help other women who are going through what I have been through. Her life was not in vain and she was sent to help others. I will be a voice to share with others the importance of allowing Christ to heal your heart throughout any storm that may come your way. I choose to DANCE IN THE RAIN!
